Turbine and materials research

This theme focuses on turbine specific key challenges. The main focus is not from a manufacturer perspective but on knowledge gaps of installing, operating and maintaining turbines in Nordic conditions from a project development and owner perspective as well as life cycle considerations. Improved knowledge in this field will to a greater extent ensure that turbines installed in Nordic conditions are optimized for specific local conditions.

Research project within the theme:

Counter rotating ferrite based power generator for floating offshore wind turbines

A challenge with wind power is the use of rare earth metals for the generators, as there are environmental and supply based concerns regarding these. This project studies an alternative generator design, based on ferrite magnets, a material that is significantly cheaper and easily available. The project will develop a 24 MW generator, designed for floating wind power application.
